Your ultimate Antigua Travel Guide, a colonial city in Guatemala

This is your ultimate Antigua Travel Guide to explore this colonial city in Guatemala

As most people travelling to Guatemala skip its capital (Guatemala City) as it is relatively dangerous and there is not too much to do, Antigua is seen as the main city of Guatemala for tourism – and for a reason. Antigua can impress visitors with its cobblestone streets, colourful colonial architecture and cultural heritage. However, it’s not just the vibe and sights that make Antigua worth visiting. The bars and restaurants are beyond amazing, and you can indulge all day long. This travel guide takes you along a journey and supports you on how to get the most out of your visit to Antigua.

How many days to spend in Antigua, Guatemala?

It is recommended to spend approximately three days in Guatemala to experience the full charm and get a taste of the lovely bars and restaurants. Furthermore, this allows you to get used to the higher altitude before climbing the Acatanango. In total, we’ve spent four nights in Antigua, of which three before hiking the volcano (we arrived late in the evening, so we could only explore the town the next day) and one after the volcano before continuing our journey to Lake Atitlan.

How to get to and get around Antigua?

From the airport, you can book shared shuttles to Antigua. Alternatively, you can arrange a private taxi to pick you up from the airport. We preferred this not to have to match arrival times and potential delays. From other locations in Guatemala, Antigua can be easily reached by shared shuttles. Generally, this is the easiest way to get around Guatemala.

Shuttles can be booked through, for example, Itamati Travels. You can request their latest schedule and book specific shuttles through Whatsapp (+502 3974 2484).

The best things to do in Antigua, Guatemala

1 || Arco de Santa Catalina

Even before visiting Antigua and Guatemala, you might know about one of the most iconic landmarks in Antigua: the Arco de Santa Catalina. The famous arch dates back to the 17th century and originally connected the Santa Catalina Convent to a school. In my opinion, the arch is one of the most picturesque places in Antigua and is worth a visit. I would advise you to visit in the early afternoon to avoid the crowds.

2 || Stroll around the cobbled streets

As usual, strolling around town is one of the key things to do in lovely cities like Antigua. It’s the perfect way to find your bearings, explore beautiful photo opportunities and catch the local life on camera. The first day we arrived, I woke up at 5:30 am and decided to go for a walk and see the city wake up. I have to admit, it left me tired, but it’s a great way to use the jetlag in your favour!

3 || Cerro de la Cruz

For a panoramic view of Antigua and its surrounding volcanoes, hike up to Cerro de la Cruz. It’s the perfect place to photograph the city from above and is an escape from the bustling streets. It’s only a short hike that is worth the effort. Nevertheless, I would recommend hiking in the early morning as it can get warm. Also, make sure to travel in pairs and during the daytime to avoid robberies.

4 || La Merced Park

La Merced Park is home to the striking yellow La Merced Church and is one of the places in Antigua where you can relax and go people-watching. During the day, and even more so in the evening, food stalls take place at the park, adding to its lively atmosphere.

5 || Nim Pot

Nim Pot is a handicraft market next to the arch and is, therefore, centrally located. It is a handicraft market where you can find a wide array of traditional Guatemalan souvenirs and handicrafts, such as textiles, paintings, masks and other souvenirs. It’s the perfect place to find unique gifts to take home. I recommend finding your souvenirs in Antigua if you want to find something less ‘touristy’ to take home.

6 || Artisan Market

Alternatively, you can find your souvenirs at the Artisan Market, located near the bus terminal. It’s a vibrant spot to explore local crafts and artwork, where you browse through stalls selling jewellery, woven goods and other souvenirs. While you are there, you can also visit the local market nearby for a local experience.

7 || San Jose Cathedral

The San Jose Cathedral is a centrepiece in the city, located next to one of the main squares. The San Jose Cathedral tells the story of the rich history of Antigua, with many earthquakes. The restored church is still in use.

8 || Convento Santa Clara

The ruins of Convento Santa Clara give insights into colonial life. Wander through the remains of the cloister and beautiful stonework. When in Antigua, we decided not to visit Santa Clara, however, for history enthusiasts, it’s a must-do.

9 || Visit a volacano

Antigua is a beautiful city in itself, not in the last place because of the amazing volcano views. Furthermore, it is the city that serves as the base for an overnight trip to the famous Acatanango volcano, an activity you can’t miss when in Antigua.

Alternatively, you can also head on a day trip to the Papaya volcano, which is more family-friendly and a good alternative if you seek an experience that is less active.

Rainbow Cafe – A beloved spot for tourists and locals, with a diverse menu including vegetarian options. It’s a great place to cool down and relax on their patio. They also offer live music and cultural events. The food is decent; however, if you are seeking a culinary highlight, there might be better options. Nevertheless, their lunch deal menus are good!

Other restaurants we have not visited during our time in Antigua, however, were recommended by friends, other blogs, and fellow travellers were, for example, Vice pizzeria for wood-fired pizzas, Cafe Samsara as a vegetarian and vegan-friendly option, Union Cafe & Juice Bar for health-conscious options and fresh juices, La Bruja as an all vegan restaurant including innovative plant-based dishes and Toku Baru for a diverse menu focusing on Asian dishes.
