Valle d’Itria Travel Guide, the trulli area of Puglia

Get ready to discover the trulli area with this valle d'itria travel guide

Probably the most popular area of Puglia, famous for the Trulli, is the Valle d’Itria. Marked by cute white houses, the trulli and beautiful landscapes in a valley, the Valle d’Itria is worth visiting. Alberobello is the main town for the trulli, but also in the surrounding towns such as Cisternino, Locorotondo and Martina Franca, you’ll find some views over trulli houses. If you just have limited time in Puglia, definitely go with this area as towns are located relatively close to each other and there is much to see. On the other hand, especially Cisternino, Locorotondo and Martina Franca look quite a bit alike and therefore might not show you all sights of the beautiful Puglia area. This Valle d’Itria Travel Guide gives an overview of the different towns located in the valley, including some images to inspire you and/or help you make decisions on your Puglia itinerary. Curious about our full 10-day trip, check it out here.

|| CISTERNINO - a small gem

Starting with Cisternino, the smallest of the towns listed and not bigger than a village I would say. Discover the Puglian vibe by grabbing a bite at one of the bakeries in town, grabbing a coffee at one of the terraces or enjoying a glass of wine at the Enoteca. Unfortunately, we haven’t tried it, but Cisternino is known for a bite called ‘bombette’, which can be ordered at most of the butchers in town.

|| LOCOROTONDO to enjoy some local wine

Locorotondo is set up in rounds, hence the name giving of this cute little town. When walking the outside circle of the city, you’ll be rewarded with views over the trulli area. It’s also possible to head down a bit and admire the view over Locorotondo from below. Locorotondo is also famous for its wine production, so visiting a winery or just enjoying a local wine on a terrace is always a good idea.

During our time in the Valle D’ Itria, we stayed in a Trulli near Locorotondo, called Trulli Carolli You can find Trulli Caroli here for an authentic trulli experience.

|| Travel to MARTINA FRANCA

Martina Franca is the biggest town in the Valle d’Itria, although I have to admit, this is not how I felt it. Martina Franca was the last town we visited during the day and in the end, the little alleys can look quite like each other. What I thought was special about Martina Franca was the main square (Piazza Roma), that’s pretty from all angles. Also in Martina Franca, you can try some of the local treats.

|| ALBEROBELLO, The best city for Trulli

Alberobello, THE famous trulli village, should be on your bucket list when visiting Puglia. All around the area, you’ll find trulli, but nowhere as many are closely located to each other as in Alberobello. As there is more to tell and mainly more to show, check out this more detailed Alberobello guide that proves why you need to head here.

Where to stay in Alberobello: When staying in Alberobello, you have the opportunity to visit Alberobello in the early morning. I would recommend B&B C’era una volta.

|| OSTUNI, the white city of Puglia

The last place to mention in this Valle d’Itria Travel Guide is Ostuni, the place where we ended our 10-day Puglia road trip and an amazing and stunning white town. The views over Ostuni are just as stunning as the views of the town itself. Ostuni should be on your list for 1 or 2 nights, as there is so much to explore around every corner. Interested in Ostuni?
