After a good night of rest in Rifugio Sennes, it is time to get up early and prepare for the second day of hiking the Alta Via 1. Be prepared for a full overview and route description of the Alta Via 1, Day 2. First of all, don’t be afraid, this day is sooooo much easier than day 1 and quite a piece of cake. The route was described as 4,5 hours, but in the end, we managed to walk it in 3,5 hours. Nevertheless, the hike was pretty and when arriving at our Rifugio or Ücia called Muntagnoles (close to Rifugio Lavarella and Ücia de Fanes, but those are better known) a nice surprise was waiting for us. Let’s get started and find out! Also, don’t forget to check out everything you need to know about the Alta Via 1, Day 1 here.
1 || Follow path 7 over de lush green fields from Rifugio Sennes
2 || Follow path 7 and 7a and start the descent towards Pederü
3 || Start the climb following path 7 to Fanes
4 || BONUS: Visit Lé Vert from your rifugio
After a good night of sleep and preparing for the day with a decent breakfast, we left for Alta Via 1, Day 2 from Rifugio Sennes. You’ll leave the Rifugio and will head right over the grass, covered in many little yellow flowers. Completely different views than during Day 1, but very pretty as well. You just keep following signs 7 and 7A with destination Pederu.
During this whole time, you are either staying on the same level or descending. After a while, the grass and gravel paths are changed for concrete, which means you get closer to Pederü. Unfortunately, you also see more and more tourists popping up, as it is a popular area for a day hike as well as for mountain biking. We did stop for a short toilet break and recharged with a bar, before continuing our day.
It’s time for the ascend of the day. Get ready for climbing about 450 meters in the sun. Yes, that was hot. And also yes, it was sometimes frustrating as there are quite some day hikers that aren’t struggling with luggage for a week. We did slowly climb up, and halfway we paused for another bar at a cute picnic table. Getting there resulted in a few scratches on the legs, but there are worse views to enjoy while having your bar and recharging.

The final stretch of the route is relatively flat and easy to run. First, you’ll pass areas of dolomite and chalk, before you’ll have a view over Lago Le Piciodel (not captured in the photos). Keep following path 7 to Fanes / Lavarellahütte. From here, it is only less than 20 minutes over a wide route, next to a little stream, passing by hut Pices Fanes, before you arrive at Ücia does Muntagnoles. This marks the end of the Alta Via 1, Day 21 honestly, this hut was our favourite one as the staff was so nice, the terrace to relax was great and the vibe was just lovely.
The owner of Ücia does Muntagnoles was so nice to tell us about Lake Lé Vert, which was only a 5 to 10-minute walk from the Rifugio and located near the Lavarella hütte, which was slightly off route when we would continue the next day. After a beer and some snacks, we decided to head to the lake and this was beyond stunning. We were here all alone, relaxing and chatting which was a perfect afternoon. So, in case you are staying at Rifugio Fanes, Lavarella or Muntagnoles – don’t forget to check out this gem.
