Cliff Walk from Doolin to the Cliffs of Moher: A Full Hiking Guide

It's time for the Cliff Walk from Doolin to the Cliffs of Moher: The Ultimate Hiking Guide

Ireland’s west coast is home to one of the most breathtaking hikes in the country: the Cliff Walk from Doolin to the Cliffs of Moher. The full cliff walk runs from Doolin to Liscannor and is 14 kilometres long. The full hike is divided into a Northern and Southern section, split up by the famous Cliffs of Moher themself. If you’re looking for a scenic adventure that combines coastal views, Atlantic air and an unforgettable hiking experience, this is the perfect route for you!

Having explored this stunning trail myself, I can confidently say that walking along these cliffs is the best way to experience their beauty. This guide will cover everything you need to make the most of your hike.ย

Note: Unfortunately, part of the Cliff Walk is currently closed for renovation. The full Southern section from Liscannor can’t be accessed. From Doolin, you can walk up to Surfer’s Path, however, it is not possible anymore to get to the Cliffs of Moher. Nevertheless, I would advise you to still experience the Cliff Walk from Doolin as a return trip (hiking), which is around 10 kilometres in total. Personally, the cliffs along the way were far more impressive than the Cliffs of Moher themselves, especially with the increased crowds, as it is not possible to hike further North from the Cliffs to spread the crowds.

If you are traveling without a car, you can also book a tour to the Cliffs of Moher from Dublin or from Galway.

Practicalities of the Cliff Walk from Doolin

The best time to visit

The best time to hike from Doolin to the Cliffs of Moher isย spring through early autumn (April – October). During these months, youโ€™ll have the best chance of good weather, clear views, and fewer muddy trails. However, Ireland’s weather is famously unpredictable, so always be prepared for sudden changes!

Trail closure

As mentioned, part of the trail has been closed since August 2024. Currently (March 2025), the trail is still closed. Therefore, you can only hike from Doolin to Surfers Path (Pollboy) before turning around. This means you won’t be able to visit the Cliffs of Moher on foot. Alternatively, you can do the hike and afterwards drive to the Cliffs of Moher for the final views. However, I prefer the cliffs along the way over the most famous cliffs. Therefore, it is still worth embarking on your Cliff Walk from Doolin adventure! For the latest information, check out this article.ย

What to bring

First of all, I would advise some good walking shoes or hiking boots. Even though the hike is easy, the trails can be muddy and uneven. Furthermore, you are in Ireland, so always bring a waterproof jacket with you as the weather can change quickly. Next to that, as the views are AMAZING, you can’t forget your camera to capture the most amazing spots. Lastly, bring your sunscreen and sufficient water and snacks.

Where to start the cliff walk?

Your walk starts in the charming coastal village of Doolin, known for its friendly atmosphere. To start your hike, head towards Fisherman’s Street in Doolin, where you’ll find a parking area just a little further along. From here, you can walk back and hike up the hill, from where you can easily join the trail.ย

Tip: If you are driving from Galway to Doolin, also have a short stop at Dungaire Castle.

How to get back to Doolin?

In the current situation, where the trail closes at the Surfers Path, the only way to get back is to walk back to Doolin. This means that in total, the trail has become 10 kilometres long.ย

When it is possible to reach the Cliffs of Moher visitors’ centre, you can take the local bus service that runs between the Cliffs of Moher and Doolin. However, these buses are only running once per hour/2 hours. Check at the Visitors Center for the latest departure times. A quicker and more convenient option, if you don’t want to wait, is to call a local taxi. Ask the Visitors Centre for a number. Buses and taxis are departing from the Eireann Bus Stop.

After getting back, you can also continue towards Dingle to get ready for the Slea Head Drive!

Approaching the Cliffs (of Moher)

This is where the real magic happens. As you get closer to the Cliffs of Moher, the cliffs become more and more dramatic, towering up toย 214 meters above the Atlantic Ocean.ย The views are truly amazing, with waves crashing below and the sounds of the puffins in the ocean.
